Last week one of our regular customer’s vehicle made the trip to our shop on the back of a Newburyport Towing tow truck. Why? Because the customer ignored the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule and neglected to have the timing belt replaced at 60,000 miles. The result was when the timing belt snapped, the engine valves whacked the head causing significant damage and an expensive repair.
Many of today’s vehicle have valve interference engines making the changing of timing belts at or before the manufacturer’s suggested intervals a critical part of a preventative maintenance schedule. The cost to change a timing belt is 70-80% less than the repairs required should a timing belt break and cause valve and head damage.
